It's the most important mission of my life - to yield my heart, soul, mind, and strength to the Almighty King of the Universe.

A man for God, following God, listening to God...

But a "mountain" for God?

I can think of a few men I know who are built like a mountain. Strong muscles like Schwartzeneggar. Large like Shaquille O'Neal. I'm sure each guy has been called "a mountain of a man."

Psalm 125 describes a real mountain of a man.

"Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be shaken but endures forever."
(Psalm 125:1)

So Arnold trusts in his workouts and his accent. Shaq trusts in his size and his personality.

Who do you trust in?

All too often, I trust myself. My own experiences, thought-patterns, abilities, or "wisdom." Deep down I know that God is the only one who is completely "trust-worthy," and that He knows best - all the time.

For the people who focus their hearts on trusting God, this Psalm gives a couple of strong promises...

"As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the LORD surrounds his people
both now and forevermore"
(Psalm 125:2)

God is near. God brings strength. God's power and majesty rises like the mountains around us. In central Ohio, I have no visible grasp of this illustration. In January, however, I spent a week in Denver, and the mountains were a constant reality. A constant source of beauty. A reminder that there's something and Someone greater - a Creator - who is always a part of the scenery. Always here. Always has been, always will be.

There's something obviously eternal about what He promises - surrounding us "both now and forevermore."

How many mistakes have we made by trusting in ourselves? How tragic to neglect the eternal, loving, all-powerful creator who is right here, in our midst. Just like Jerusalem, engulfed by mountains, we are surrounded by God's presence, protection, and power. Why am I all too content to run around as if the 'mountains' aren't there? Why am I content to live by my own tastes and abilities, when God somehow offers MUCH more?

Those who trust in Him will be like Mount Zion - "which cannot be shaken and endures forever." Apparently, we'd rather be shaken and fade away?

When will we step up the trust-level and become mountains for God?

Do it again, God! (Count: Psalm 126)

This morning, I woke up earlier than normal... came to church earlier than normal...

Really wanting to get a good head start on my day with people and with God. Hopefully not in that order.

Psalm 126 is such a great reminder of God's love and greatness to us.

His love is described as a dream come true.
He has done some great things for each of us.

The correlation would be that "we are filled with joy."

Possibly written for the Jews upon their (hoped for) return from captivity, this song expresses powerful joy that people feel when God intervenes, blesses, and does great things for us.

It's all too easy to focus on the tasks of my day ahead. It's all too easy to let myself wonder about the things God hasn't done yet. It's all too human to sometimes fear what's going to go wrong next.

But God has given us eternal life (Romans 6:23).
But God has created us in His image (Genesis 1:26-27).
But God has given us His One and Only Son (John 1:14, 18).
But God has provided for the things we really need (Philippians 4:19).
But God has filled our hearts with His love (1 John 4).

Specifically, I thank Him again today for reaching a selfish sheep like me in a deep way when I was 13.

I thank Him for picking me up a thousand times since then and setting my feet on the solid rock of Jesus Christ.

I thank Him for providing things in this life that I don't deserve - a fantastic wife, two extremely cute and healthy kids, a great ministry, and countless friends and people who have poured into my life.

I thank Him for the opportunity to gain "treasures in Heaven" based on how I live and how I love people.

I thank Him for today.

In the second half of the song (Psalm 126), it's like they're asking God to do it all over again. Bless our crops with a harvest. Let us see great things happen in your Kingdom. Give us more of your wonderful love and blessing - we're addicted to it!

I should spend more time thinking about and thanking God for the "dreams come true" in my life. Especially the ones that were bigger or better than I would have dreamed for myself.

This kind of focus brings immense joy, and the audacity - or is it faith - to ask Him to do it again!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uunplug.blogspot.com/2006/03/do-it-again-god-count-psalm-126.html' title='Do it again, God! (Count: Psalm 127)

Here's a chapter I usually talk about at Weddings, thanks to the influence of Wes Hartzfeld and probably Roger Peugh.

"Unless the LORD builds the house, its workers labor in vain." Psalm 127.

Who are you living for?

Who are you "arranging your life" around?

Usually, it's yourself. Sometimes, it's your boss or your work. Sometimes, it's the person you're trying to impress.

But unless your work is centered in God's heart, you are clearly wasting your time. A very powerful message.

The other verse that jumps off the page goes like this...

"Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from Him."

A few thoughts about this...

- Yes, children are a great blessing!

- I think all couples who would like to have kids must realize that it happens ONLY in God's time and ONLY because He chooses to bless. NOT because we are little 'gods' who can have kids any time we want. We can't. Too many wonderful couples struggle with infertility and miscarriages that are painful reminders of this. We cannot create life on our own. God must bless.

- Unfortunately, some assume that a couple without children is 'cursed' rather than 'blessed.' While some of these couples do feel intense heartache, I don't think God views it as a curse. I don't think God is raining down judgment upon these couples. My wife and I have been one of those couples, losing our first child to miscarriage. That heartbreaking loss has opened the door for countless OTHER blessings in our lives.

- God does have other rewards and blessings to give out. Like a wonderful marriage that pulls together and deeper. Like couples who decide to adopt needy children or go into full-time missions. Like growing a heart that lets God build the house however He wants and being excited and content with God's "architecture" in your life.

After saying all of that, I know I am blessed to have kids like Allie and Luke. I do not take them for granted. Because of that, I am committed to being a husband and a father who builds our house on the foundation of loving and fearing God.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uunplug.blogspot.com/2006/02/protect-this-house-count-psalm-127.html' title='Protect this House! "Fear" is commonly associated with things that shock, scare, or disgust us (see: Fear Factor).

But the Bible's definition of "fear"?

Reverence. Awe. Dependence. Humility. Obedience.

Psalm 128:1 - "Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in His ways."

There it is. If I fear God, I'll do what He says. If I do what He says, I'll be blessed.

Much of this Psalm talks about what God's blessing could look like for you. Prosperity in your life. A healthy marriage. A strong legacy, possibly through your children.

What sort of blessing are you looking for from God? How would you like Him to respond on your behalf? Make things different?

Seems like that blessing is intimately tied to how much you really fear the Lord and do what He says.

Out of Oppression (Count: Psalm 129)

I'm not sure I have personally been "oppressed." There might come a day like that in my life, but so far, I have been in the majority or in the 'accepted' class in society.

God has a special heart for the oppressed.

Throughout the Old Testament, we hear the Father's love for the 'alien, fatherless, and widow.'

God allowed his chosen people Israel to be oppressed, mostly because of their sin. But the oppression served to turn their hearts back toward Him.

Psalm 129 reveals a heart that turns to God in the midst of oppression. The people of Israel, asking God to take revenge on the oppressors - probably the empire of Babylon.

The writer wishes that the enemy would wither. That they would be turned back in shame.

On one hand, songs like this are essential to understanding the events and heart of Israel through some tremendous difficulties.

On the other hand, songs like this remind us that God is in charge of the oppressor and the oppressed. Ultimately, our goal should be to find God's blessing upon our lives. The previous Psalms (which I'll write about above) give more detail on God's blessing on us....

Book Review: Lamb and the Fuhrer

This afternoon, I finally finished the third book in the "Great Conversations" series by Ravi Zacharias. I already considered Ravi one of my favorite Christian authors, but this series has been... exceptional.

His first in this series, The Lotus and the Cross, portrays a fictional "what-if" type of conversation between Jesus and Buddha. The second volume, Sense and Sensuality, posed a conversation between Jesus and the English poet Oscar Wilde about living for pleasure.

This current book, The Lamb and the Fuhrer, is a conversation between Jesus and Adolph Hitler.

I thought the conversation would have something to do with grace and judgment. Could even Hitler, the most notoriously-evil leader of our time (or "all time"?) have found forgiveness and salvation through Jesus Christ? Could He escape God's judgment?

The book did go there, but focused most of its energies on Hitler's own life, beliefs, and self-delusions.

During his life, Hitler exalted himself as a "god" who meted out judgments based on his own philosophy or beliefs.

He believed that Germany - and more specifically, the Aryan race - was to be the superior race and rule over a powerful kingdom for a thousand years. He believed that anyone weak, diseased, or disabled, should be exposed of. To him, the Jews were an inferior, conniving group of people who should be wiped off the face of the earth.

Hitler told himself (and others) that His will would not be stopped. That he was the supreme leader, emperor, rule-maker, and decision-maker. It was all propaganda, deception, authoritarian rhetoric that millions of people bought into.

Hitler chose his own laws over God's. Hitler chose his own absolute judgment and lack of forgiveness over Christ's offer of redemption, forgiveness, and love. Hitler chose a facade of love for country over any form of genuine love.

Author Ravi Zacharias weaves a great, imaginary conversation between Jesus and Hitler, just several moments after Hitler's suicide. Ravi also introduces several people into the discussion - people who knew Hitler during his lifetime and stood as witnesses of the man's personality and (lack of) character.

As usual, Ravi goes back into some of the philosophies and ideas that influenced Hitler's own way of thought - naturalism, nihilism, Nietzsche, etc. Interesting to note the consequence of ideas as they take shape in the following generation. Hitler's life and legacy served a message to the world about what life is like when you remove God from the equation...

Or at least "try to remove God." God is still in control - before, during, and after the reigns of human rulers. He sets them up and also makes them fall.

Souls, Sins, and Such (Count: Psalm 130)

Before reading this Psalm, I was all feeling guilty for not keeping up with my reading of the Psalms. Don't get me wrong, I have been reading, just not blogging. Life comes at you fast, or so the commercial (with Fabio) says.

Anyhow, so I was feeling guilty...

And here's Psalm 130 talking about forgiveness of sins.

"If God kept a record of sins, who could stand?"

The question is rhetorical, the answer is obvious - nobody could stand.

But God offers unfailing love. God offers complete forgiveness. God wants our souls to long for Him.

We often find ourselves waiting on God. Unanswered prayer. Unsure of His will. Distant from Him in our sins and personal guilt... But this man is pursuing God, persevering, waiting for God to give Him a response.

Does your soul long for God? Unfortunately, we don't long for God until we are completely "in the depths" of life's struggle or feeling the weight of our sins...

Ultimately, this song isn't about me, my sins, or my soul's longing for God.

It's about the God who loves to redeem and rescue us. The God with unfailing love for His peeps. Will my soul focus on myself, or on Him?

Quiet the Ambitions... (Count: Psalm 133)

So, unity is like pouring oil on my head.

Sounds pretty disgusting.

Okay, so I'm supposed to read that it's a different kind of oil... with a different kind of purpose.

Psalm 133 connects with the Jewish religion, where "The oil of Aaron's anointing (Exodus 29:7; Leviticus 21:10) saturated all the hair of his beard and ran down on his priestly robes, signifiying his total consecration to holy service." (note from NIV Study Bible)

So...

JUST LIKE a good dousing of oil gets Aaron ready to do some God-honoring things with his life and ministry...

UNITY between brothers is pretty awesome. It really is. The best friend of my entire life - and the best memories of my life as a Christian - have taken place in the context of united friends.

Maybe you don't realize how great unity is until you finally experience it.
Maybe you forget how precious unity is until you have to work hard to acheive it.
Maybe you aren't pursuing unity right now because you don't understand how much GOD loves to see it.

Acts 2:44 tells us that "All the believers were together and had everything in common."

They agreed on the majors. They focused their hearts on loving God and loving people.

And.. yeah... they were blessed. I don't know if oil was involved, but no one would question the power and excitement they shared together.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uunplug.blogspot.com/2006/02/all-for-one-and-one-for-oil-count.html' title='All for One, and One for Oil? Or only when there's someone watching.

Do I 'lift up hands' - is my praise evident - to God when others are not around.

I must say that some of my best times of worship are when I'm by myself. In the car, in my office, at home with my family.

I also must say that reading these Psalms is a way of increasing my awareness and tendency to praise God throughout the day. I have a book by David Crowder called Praise Habit, which walks through some of the Psalms and gives reflections on a life of praise.

I just like the title - 'Praise habit.' In fact, if it's a Sunday-only thing, it's probably not real.

Payback? (Count: Psalm 135)

Yep, that's me - a little behind on the journey through Psalms. During the next couple of days, I'll get caught up, starting on Psalm 135, a great praise to the God who responds.

Because of God's track record in helping Israel, He is worthy of trust.

Because of God's power and compassion, He is worthy of praise.

Because of verses like this...

"For the Lord will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants" (Psalm 135:14)...

We have GOT to remember these things about the character of God.

He will stand up for His own. He will not let evil go unpunished.

Often, in this world, it seems like He actually does let evil go unpunished. People get away with horrible crimes. We all know that and probably have a story that would cry out for a better ending. ABC has such a show now, called InJustice. Though I have not seen it and do not want to, they seemed to begin the promotion of the show by highlighting stories where justice has not been served. It's common. It bothers us. It obviously doesn't seem right.

But God will deal with it. God will rescue the victims - those who turn to Him and love and fear Him.

God will ultimately punish evil - in this life or the next.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uunplug.blogspot.com/2006/02/payback-count-psalm-135.html' title='Payback? When she stops loving you back. When you don't get what you want from him.

When it's no longer convenient, human love often throws in the towel, calls it a day, and hits the road.

But Psalm 136 kind of love? Well, that love endures forever.

The writer walks us through a concise history of creation and Israel - the Old Testament up to this point, really - and recognizes God's love through all of it.

Take a walk through your life, and think about the evidence of God's love for you throughout your life...

Birth - every breath is from Him.

Growth - He sustains, protects, helps, teaches.

Family - Some families are a blessing, and other families make us long for God as a loving Father.

On our staff - just like at The Chapel - we have a staff member share the "Top Ten" things/people/events that God has used to influence and shape who they are today.

What are your top ten?

As I count down the events of my life - God's love endures through all of it.

Cry me a River (Count: Psalm 137)

I have to admit, I read this Psalm a few days ago, and was stunned at first. It doesn't fit in well with the 13 Psalms that follow after it.

That's because someone ELSE wrote it.

David didn't write Psalm 137. One of God's people Israel wrote it, sometime after the time of exile/banishment (586 B.C.) to Babylon.

The fact that this song is listed in the Book of Psalms, though, means that God wants to say something to us here.

I suppose it reminds me of a few things...

(1) We can indeed bring our troubles and questions to God.

Sometimes, I try to internalize or forget my troubles. That hardly works, and it doesn't make things go away. We have got to talk things out with God. Write them out. Work them out. Talk plainly and openly with God. Here's a song of a brokenhearted, angry, bitter man or woman who has all but given up hope. His enemies are mocking him. But he still talks to God. He still thinks about God's blessing on Jerusalem, which leads me to thought #2.

(2) The Jews still have a special place in God's story.

Sure, this is an Old Testament Psalm. Sure, this is set in Babylonian exile and written by a Jew 2600 years ago. What in the world does this have to do with today? Well, I think I should learn to grasp a faith that stands up in the midst of suffering. I should appreciate the heritage of the Christian faith that goes way back to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jesus is a descendant of a Jewish King who wrote most of these Psalms.

But God is not done with Israel yet. Not to get into the book of Revelation, but there will be a new Jerusalem someday... What this writer is longing for will be restored and enhanced beyond his dreams.

(3) Revenge belongs to God.

Maybe this person in exile doesn't have the strength or resources to take revenge - but it's clear he wants it. We must let God take care of paying people back. Our culture basically breeds us to believe that we have to stand up for ourselves, fight back, and give them what they deserve.

In all actuality, they will get what they deserve. God is just. God is a judge. God will not tolerate it.

So let Him take care of things.

Until then, it's okay to let Him know how you feel about it.

Bold (Count: Psalm 138)

Well, today I read Psalms 137-139 several times, and it was really good. I am starting to notice more when I miss reading a Psalm. It reminds me and inspires me to praise God and think about Him throughout the day...

I think it's interesting that God made David bold and "stouthearted" after he called on God.

I should be praying for more boldness in certain areas of my life.

I love the reminder that God has a great purpose for my life (Psalm 138:8). I guess Rick Warren didn't make that idea up all by himself.

Isn't it permissible to tell people that God has a purpose for their lives?

And God will complete - pursue - enable - fulfill that purpose as long as we are living to praise Him. It all fits together so well. God's love endures forever, fulfilling His purposes.

So Precious (Count: Psalm 139)

Psalm 139 hit me on so many levels.

If you wonder about your value, your worth, your esteem... or if God really pays attention to you - read this Psalm.

God knows every thought, every word, every action, every concern of my life. He knows "all my ways."

It's almost too deep for me to comprehend.

Sometimes, I get sentimental and reflect on my life. Usually, it's when I'm going through stuff or deciding what to throw away.

God is sentimental about my past, present, and future. He knows it all.

"All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be" (139:16).

Might as well talk with Him more about the future, eh?

Might as well ask Him for wisdom at each crossroad.

Might as well trust Him with any of the "obstacles" that come my way in life.

Might as well read this chapter a few more times.

"Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me, and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting." (Count: Psalm 140)

Here's a Psalm I'd like to look at from two different angles.

The Personal Angle: If I'm ever in a bind, facing enemies in any circumstances, this is a great Psalm begging God for help and defense. "Rescue me... Protect me... Keep me...." - and then a list of things I'd like to see happen to my enemy, just David being honest.

The Theology Angle: Yeah, a list of things I'd like to see happen to my enemy. David doesn't mince words:

"Let burning coals fall upon them;
may they be thrown into the fire,
into miry pits, never to rise." (Psalm 140:10).

Question: Here's a guy wishing destruction upon His enemy... but aren't Christ-followers supposed to LOVE our enemies?

See, here's where a lot of people might say, "Well, I guess the Bible contradicts itself. I'm done reading this."

But I'd just like to list a few ways this is worked out, both logically AND biblically.

(1) I think David establishes the fact that his enemies are ALSO God's enemies. These are wicked people, full of violence, malice, slander, and all sorts of junk. They should not be allowed to do evil things. Basically, David is taking God's side, wanting to see evil stopped.

(2) When we talk about "loving our enemies," we sometimes must think about what it really means to show love. If we love them, wouldn't we want what's best for them? Love sometimes means confronting an enemy with the truth. Point out the consequences of their actions. We benefit from a legal system that is set up to correct destructive behavior, and hopefully restore the person to what they could/should be.

(3) When Jesus talks about loving our enemies, he specifically mentions praying for them who persecute you, which is exactly what David prays. In the Old Testament, the "burning coals" that David wants to see on his enemy's head are often used as symbols of repentance - Is he praying that his wicked enemy would be turned towards repentance and see the error of his ways? I think so.

(4) Let's give David credit for allowing God to take revenge if He wants. David is not taking matter into his own hands, he's leaving it up to God. Pretty impressive, knowing our human emotions and anger and wanting to make things even.

At the end of the day, I hope when I think of my enemies, I pray for them. I'm not the kind of guy who likes to have enemies, necessarily, but I would like to know what to do with them when I do. =)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uunplug.blogspot.com/2006/01/rescue-me-count-psalm-140.html' title='Rescue Me! But it's all in a spirit of humility, not accusing or blaming God for my situation. Just being honest with my feelings and my circumstances and asking for God's help.

He loves that. He sees me admit that it's out of my control. He sees that I trust Him. He sees that I am, for at least THIS moment, really dependent. Really is a prayer we should pray more often.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uunplug.blogspot.com/2006/01/um-help-count-psalm-142.html' title='Um... Tell Him everything you feel, even the frustration, the fear, the anger. I have heard it said many times, "God can handle it." Just be yourself.

Here is a psalm of David where we see that he's worn out, attacked, and "like those long dead."

It's been a while since I've felt like that, but I have been there. I do remember times when I felt a total loss of hope, questioned God's involvement, and felt crushed like this.

We have to commend and even imitate David's gut-level honesty. But true, dependent, and even "successful" faith requires much more than just being honest with God.

It requires that I turn to God, trust God, and call on God.

David does all of these things in this Psalm. God really loves to hear prayers like this. From the often-quoted 2 Chronicles 7:14 to many passages about God waiting to respond to the prayers of His people... God is a God who responds when we cry out.

David reminds himself of God's great works, his unfailiing love, and His presence every morning.

I can be honest about the despair and my situation.

But I must also be honest and acknowledge that God is here, He cares, and He responds. Don't be afraid to ask God for deliverance, as David directly calls on God to help and save him from his enemy!

Real Strength (Count: Psalm 144)

Psalm 144, here are a few thoughts.

I'm writing at 9:38pm, at least glad to get a Psalm in today. Ever have a day like that? Where you finally get around to doing the thing that is a priority for you every day? Anyhow...

"Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord."

Yes, David truly viewed God as his own, personal source of strength.

God is described as powerful, responsive, and waiting for us to call on Him for protection.

When was the last time God was actually my "Rock"?

I know I like calling Him that, because it sounds powerful, "masculine," and unshakeable.

God is my Refuge, my Defender, and my Leader.

You see some of David's "war language" - as God prepares Him to fight the enemy. I wonder if too often we have focused on the lovingkindness and forgiveness of God, and forget the fierce and unrivaled power God has.

Shame on us for trying to fight ANY battle in our own strength. Israel did that a lot, and it is easy to blame them.

You could say each day is a battle, and for many of us, it is. But what specific battles is God interested in fighting with us? David mentions the foreigners who would oppose him, and the way they bring lies and deceit. Is he saying that God is interested in fighting the battle for Truth? The battle for His people and anyone who would call on Him?

Regardless of who is fighting, I want to know that God is on my side. Don't you?

The one condition for this incredible help and blessing from God is this - Is He your God? "Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord." Does He know that He's your God? Does my life reflect that He is?

That's my goal. That's also where all blessing, strength, and victory can be found in this life.

Generation What? (Count: Psalm 145)

I'm starting to notice some great recurring themes after just six chapters.

For example...
- God deserves praise for His great works.
- God deserves prasie for His care and compassion.
- Those who trust in God will find that God is present and ready to help.
- God will destroy the wicked.

But here, in Psalm 145, something new jumps out that maybe I didn't see before.

Here it is:

"Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
his greatness no one can fathom.
One generation will commend your works to another;
they will tell of your mighty acts.
They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
They will tell of the power of your awesome works,
and I will proclaim your great deeds.
They will celebrate your abundant goodness,
and joyfully sing of your righteousness." (Psalm 145:3-7)

Plain and simple, here's what jumps out at me....

All these common truths - the great things God has done - really must be shared with the next generation.

What is my generation doing to pass it on to the next?

Unfortunately, I see a lot of my generation complaining about the previous generation. Some are trying to create our own generation's type of church. Some have given up on Christianity altogether. Some find it too easy to blame the past. While much of my own thought processes resonate with the emerging or postmodern church movements, I think the best church movements or leaders take time to listen to what God has done. We should value previous generations for the good things God has done and has to say through them.

In reality, we all need to be looking NOW at what legacy we are going to leave.

Will yours be a legacy that points to the greatness of God?
Even if you don't have children, will you still make an effort to pass something on to the next?
Are we looking now at what God IS currently doing, and preparing to share that with others?

I have an 18-month old daughter who seems to enjoy holding hands and saying "Ayyy-mennnn!" when we are done praying. As much fun as that is, I am also committed to sharing with her and her month-old brother some of the terrific things God has done in our lives.

Psalm 145 is a reminder to listen to the previous generation, and pass something on to the next.

In the meantime... "I will meditate on your (God's) wonderful works!"

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uunplug.blogspot.com/2006/01/generation-what-count-psalm-145.html' title='Generation What? While the other Psalms I've read this week seem to focus on his greatness, his power, and how He is worthy of praise... this one spotlights a God who will rescue.

"Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save."

Men - even the most valiant of men - and women - will let you down. Is my hope completely in God? Is it first and foremost in God?

If you read through this Psalm, you have to realize that all the "frustrations" of life are not beyond God's care.

Physical pain?
Loneliness?
Depression?
Widowed?
Rejected?

Doesn't matter. God loves you, and He wants to rescue you out of whatever situation you're in. He really does offer a better way.

Again, here's a Psalm that focuses a little bit on Israel - and that all the generations of Zion should praise this "God of Jacob."

Man's plans - and lives - will ultimately come to an end. God is officially here, and ready to respond to the needs of his people. Are you one of them?

What does God actually do? (Count: Psalm 147)

Today I'll just jot down a few thoughts on Psalm 147. I know, you thought I wouldn't get around to it on Saturday. Well, here goes...

After you read the Psalm... consider these thoughts...

- It's pretty clear that Israel is special to God. Not "was," but "is." God still favors them, and here is a song that reminds the Jews of their special place in God's heart and promises.

- Notice all of the present tense verbs. God builds, heals, determines, gathers, covers, provides, sustains, calls... God is very active today in the way the world works and grows. This song is another one where God gets the credit for all the ways that our needs are met.

- God is not impressed with the strength of man or of beasts. What impresses God is a heart that is open to Him. 147:11 - The Lord delights in those who fear him - explained by - those who trust in God's unfailing love. How can I get better at trusting God, giving him credit, reverence, trust...

- If God cares so much for creation, shouldn't I? Why don't I recycle?

- These words include God's sustaining care and also God's powerful judgment. Why are people so quick to grasp a God of love and grace, but not a God of righteousness and truth? Probably because most of us don't want to play by His rules or live by His laws...

But that's exactly where chapter 147 ends - God has given His people His word - the law - and it is a blessing. Isn't it?

How has the Bible been a blessing in your life lately? It's waiting...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uunplug.blogspot.com/2006/01/what-does-god-actually-do-count-psalm.html' title='What does God actually do? This backward journey through Psalms is helping me think more about worship, and if I'm WILLING to give God the credit, attention, and love that His greatness deserves.

Here David mentions Israel again, calling them, "a people close to His (God's) heart."

How great is our God?

I suppose it doesn't matter what you or I think. God is far greater than anything or anyone in heaven or on earth. It's reality. But He wants us to praise Him. He wants to bring us joy and be close to us. (Count: Psalm 149)

Here's a shorter review of a nine-verse psalm.

Psalm 149.

Do you ever wonder if God is happy about your life?

Sometimes, I know God chooses to love me, forgive me, and think about me. Other times, I feel ashamed and distant from Him, and assume he doesn't approve of me.

After three verses about people who spend time praising God in songs, dancing, and instrumental music... David tells us clearly that "the LORD takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with salvation."

While the rest of the psalm talks about the greatness of praise and worship and understanding God's Word (The "double-edged sword"), we've got to let these words soak in...

"the Lord takes delight in his people."

God enjoys thinking about me. He wants me to interact with Him. He loves it when I turn to Him and recognize His greatness. His works. Remember things He has said. When I get creative about expressing my love and thanks to Him.

He just loves that.

As a Christ-follower I really admire said last week, "I'm just a guy who Jesus loves."

What if that statement became the foundation for how I think about myself?
Where I find my self value?
Who I live to please?
How I view God in response?

If I take the time to praise God and show Him my love, he really enjoys me - DELIGHTS in me. Gotta love that!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uunplug.blogspot.com/2006/01/does-god-have-joy-count-psalm-149.html' title='Does God have Joy? (Count: Psalm 150)

Well, it has been a while since I've posted an "Unplugged" devotional. So I'm here with a tribute and a new direction.

Several years ago, I ran an email devotional called "FUSION", where I loved to write and share thoughts on life, God, and relationships. FUSION was a weekly discipline and really a blast to write, and I wrote for more than a year. Tim Cooper, a close friend of mine, wrote a daily e-mail where he'd just read a chapter of Scripture and share how it touched his heart. For over 200 days, Tim's e-mail encouraged people and challenged his heart from God's Word.

After a week's sojourn for a class in Denver, I've found a renewed interest in writing and expressing thoughts from God's word. Since it's been a while from my last post, maybe nobody will read but me, and that's okay. I want this to be some thoughts and prayers between me and God first anyway. Here goes...

Today, I'm starting a devotional countdown through the book of Psalms. I pledge to "average" one Psalm a day, as I read backwards through the book of Psalms.

PSALM 150...

"Praise the Lord.
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness."

This song tells us where and why to praise God. Where do you praise God? Do you have a holy place (sanctuary, church, temple, etc.) to sing or pray or think about Him? How much of my life actually brings praise to God? How often do I put some form of Christian music or worship music in my CD player?

Last week, at the Denver Seminary bookstore, I asked the cash register guy if they had the latest David Crowder CD. David Crowder Band is a younger group that does great band worship. The cash guy said, "Actually, I don't listen to Christian music much." I can relate with that. I have gone through times in my life when I thought all Christian music sounded the same or lacked quality. Okay, I still believe that...

But every generation needs to express praise to God through music. For David (King David, not David Crowder), the praise would come with the trumpet, the harp, the lyre, the tambourine, the flute, and the cymbals -- every instrument that is fit to praise a King.

Psalm 150 - the last chapter. David has been through some incredible highs, and some depressing and painful lows. I suppose I'll work my way back through them.

At the end of it all, God still deserves praise. God's "acts of power" and his "surpassing greatness" should still compel me to sing.

I find that my best moments in worship are when I actually think about something God has done in my life...

- I think about what a great blessing it is to be a father, and have a healthy new baby boy named Luke, and how much I don't deserve God's blessing like this.

- I think about the tremendous opportunity I have to learn about the Bible and then teach and encourage others, and how unworthy I am to speak on God's behalf.

- I think about specific mighty acts of God, starting with raising Jesus from the dead. Wondering about how God can imagine and create things like eternity, creation, and love. Remembering friends and family whose lives have been changed by God in such dramatic ways.

Sometimes, these moments sneak up on me like espionage. I'll be standing there, singing, probably thinking about how the song sounds or what words come next, when God will bring to mind someone special in my life. Maybe one of you reading this...

- I think about people he's used in my life to bring me great encouragement. Sometimes, I'm brought to great emotion in worship because I miss those people - they aren't here in Delaware with us. Sometimes, I'm brought to great feeling in my singing because I see God changing lives around me, and using people right here in Delaware to touch people's lives.

I wonder what things David was thinking about. Those "acts of power" from God. Was he thinking about victories God had given Him - like defeating Goliath and the Philistines? Was he thinking about God's blessing and forgiveness on David's family in spite of sins like adultery and murder? Was he thinking in general about God's creation and how He rules the earth with love and truth?

At the end of the day, what are the things that you should be praising God about? Acts of power in your life? Surpassing greatness that you've seen in Him or His creation?

Here's a man who has written most of 150 chapters, and he's still passionate about praising God. If my heart is really focusing on God and what He has to show me, He will never stop amazing me, blessing me, teaching me, and bringing my heart into emotional worship.

He concludes, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord."

Every breath is a gift. Every moment is an opportunity for you and me to seize the best of the connected-to-God life.

God, as I begin this journey through the Psalms, I first want to thank you for today. I praise you for the things you have done, for who you are, and for your great acts of love. I praise you for the people you've brought into my life. I praise you for the things you have brought me through and for the power of your love.

I praise you because you are in control and you respond to the cries and needs of your children. I praise you because you hold the past, the present, and the future. I praise you with whatever music is in my stereo and my heart.

Please give me the strength, the courage, the wisdom, and the love so that I can praise you in all I do and say today.

Let everything that has breath praise you.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uunplug.blogspot.com/2006/01/word-from-psalms-count-psalm-150.html' title='The Word from Psalms... If you haven't bought gifts for anyone yet, your clock is now ticking. If you haven't made your Christmas wish list yet, people are buying you things you might not want. Every year, we celebrate and enjoy Christmas for so many good reasons. We might even entertain discussion or prayer about the "true meaning of Christmas."

Several months ago, I got excited about the idea of doing a Christmas sermon series that connected with some of the most memorable and loved Christmas movies. I am committed to preaching straight from Scripture, and use culture as a way to connect. We're going to focus on the gospel accounts of Christ's prophecy, birth, and reception. We'll probe the Bible's account of "Christmas" and examine the most important virtues of the season. Here's a schedule of four powerful virtues of Christmas, as found in the Gospels:

Sunday, December 4 - "Believe" - Matthew 1 and the calling of Joseph
Sunday, December 11 - "Love" - John 3 and 1 John 4
Sunday, December 18 - "Give" - Luke 1 and 2
Sunday, December 25 - "Receive" - John 1

Since this is called "Reel Christmas" and we want to connect faith with life and culture... I will be looking for Christmas movies and clips that inspire us to "Believe," "Love," "Give," and "Receive" in the God-given meaning of Christmas.

Some movies that are being considered...
- The Polar Express
- It's a Wonderful Life
- Elf
- The Christmas Carol
- Christmas Vacation
- The Grinch Who Stole Christmas
- Home Alone
- Miracle on 34th Street

Can you think of others?

Can you think of a scene from any of these movies that would inspire people (you included) to greater levels of BELIEVING, LOVING, GIVING, or RECEIVING?

Just curious....

Is Anybody Out There?

While it's been at least a month since I've posted here, I wonder if anyone checks this site anymore. Life and church and all my other commitments have apparently suffocated my ability to "UNPLUG" here on this site. I would love to keep updating thoughts here on this, and may do it even if nobody is listening or reading.

Yesterday, we gave a lot of thought to the issue of judgment.

In John 8, some teachers of the law find a woman "caught in the act of adultery" and bring her to Jesus for judgment. John tells us that they are setting a real trap for Jesus. If he tells them to let her go, they could claim that He rejects the law of Moses that says she must be put to death (Leviticus 20:10; Exodus 22:21). If he tells them to kill her, they could claim that Jesus rejects the judicial priority that only the Romans can enact capital punishment on someone.

Ultimately, John leads us to sympathize with the woman - as Jesus does when he says, "Neither do I condemn you."

I hate to break it to you... but... well....

You are that woman. I am that woman.

We are all sinners who deserve judgment. We have all fallen - and we DO fall - into sin and should be pronounced guilty.

And yet, Jesus forgives. Jesus restores. Jesus saves and does not condemn. Jesus brings hope. Jesus helps us change. Jesus shows us how to change. Jesus teaches us.

And he says things like, "Go and leave your life of sin."

He believes you can do it.

Many people feel helpless, pointless, hopeless in the quest to do right or stop doing wrong.

But Jesus believes, empowers, and releases.

Will you let Him keep doing that in your life?

Is anybody out there?

The "Happy-Faced Guy"?

Hey, I'm back with a few more devotional thoughts. Sorry I've taken a few week's "hiatus" from posting here at UUNPLUG. Fall is always a busy (and fun) season of ministry, with more lessons, thoughts, and opportunities than one can schedule into these "already full" days.

Here goes with one of the latest thoughts, that I'm not sure I can fully "develop" or "polish" off for you...

----------

I know that God tells us that the "fruit" or evidence of His Spirit's work in our lives consists of "love, joy, and peace" (Galatians 5:22-23).

Love? Joy? Peace?

I wonder if I display those qualities in my life. Do I bring joy to the room?

Some people overflow with joy. I have a friend named Brian who has ALWAYS given me the freedom, the humor, and the comfort to "have fun" when He's around. Do you know anyone like that?

Someone who has a knack for making your day a little happier? Someone who picks you up with his laugh, her smile, or his "make yourself at home" personality?

Over the last few days, Jennie and I have been thinking about people in our lives - friends, family, co-workers... who are really just "happy-faced people."

Not fake. Not forced happiness. Not "playing the Christian role."

We're talking about people who have a knack for warmth, love, and a smile. One of my favorite music groups of all time has a new song out about the power of our smiles.

The power of a smile. Do you believe in that? In fact, human studies show us that our natural instinct is to smile when someone else smiles at us.

One of my teaching mentors always reminds me to "smile" when I'm up front or talking with people. He's right - it makes a difference in the way you come across and what people remember about you.

The picture above is my profile for this website. But it's also something I want to be known for.

I don't have to be the "life of the party" but - with the hope and joy God has put in my heart.... I would really like to "bring life" to the party. In short, I want to be a "happy-faced guy." I want to be a guy who picks people up. Who makes them feel loved and appreciated and at ease. I want them to see a contagious love, a consistent joy, and a confident peace in my life.

When it's time to mourn and be honest about the struggles of life, I won't force a happy face. I won't be fake about it. But I do want to look for the good and find God's presence in every situation.

What would your closest friends say about you? Are you known as someone who can light up the room and brighten someone's day? Are you that "Happy-faced guy"? Could you be...?

How to know if it's clean...

To be honest, there are times when I dread "doing the chores" of house or yard keeping.

I do have my moments, however, when I become a neat freak. I can't stop cleaning up. Maybe you know the feeling or you get in the obsessive cleaning or fixing mode. You love products like "Krud Kutter" that just obliterate nasty stains and marks.

When you do a job, you want the job done right. Fixed. Clean. Finished.

Many people are like that when it comes to God. We want to be spiritually "clean" or righteous, so we get in the habit of doing things to look righteous. We set goals and boundaries that help us "be good" or avoid sin.

It's easy to point at the New Testament Pharisee (Matthew 15:1-20) and say that human rules and goals and traditions really cannot make me clean. It's easy to see legalism and empty rituals in somebody else's life.

Are there parts of my life that aren't clean? Absolutely, and I should be in "clean-up mode" to set those things straight. Like the Pharisee, I can look at my spiritual life, make a to-do list, and go on my self-righting attack.

Jesus challenged Pharisees then and now about what it means to be clean. If your heart is not clean, your actions are worthless. Everything starts within, trusting the forgiveness and righteousness of Jesus Christ for every day's action, word, and thought.

Your actions reveal what's in your heart. So if you want to go "Krud Kutter" for God in your life, you've got to start on the inside. What's going on in there?

A Proud Daddy.

When my daughter Allison wore this outfit, I must tell you I was pretty proud of it. Sometimes I look at her and struggle to put into words or even wrap my mind around the way and the amount that I love her.

The fact that she's incredibly cute is one thing. But our connection as father and daughter is something that just keeps growing and developing every single day.

When she tries to repeat something I say... When she does something I do... When she laughs at just the right time... When she already listens and does (or doesn't do) something I tell her to do...

It's easy to be proud of Allie.

It's teaching me about how God is my Father. How God invites me to be His child.

I've read verses about being God's child, and sometimes my thought process starts and stops at salvation. Take John 1:12 - "But as many as received Him (Jesus), to them He gave the power to become the sons of God, even to those who believe on His name."

On one level, that's about finding salvation, forgiveness, and a relationship with God by believing in Jesus Christ.
On another level, that's only the beginning of life as God's child.

We are called his "dearly loved children."

Do you know that God is always watching you? You are made in His image, and He's proud of the faith and goodness He sees in you?

Do you know God always wants to share Himself with you? You were created to turn to Him, open your heart to Him, and follow His words and His heart?

Do you know that God is proud of you? When you obey Him, God feels loved just like a beaming father feels when His kids make Him proud.

Allie is fourteen months old, and making her earthly daddy proud.

Is your Heavenly Daddy proud of you?

Are you a Loser?

Nobody really wants to be a loser. To the contrary, most of our culture is obsessed with winning.

Be the best at all costs. Win the race. Look out for #1. Just win, baby.

Unfortunately, most people find victory only on this earth. We only compete to win in the "temporary." Get the grade, the promotion, the girl. Win the game, the prize, the popularity. Gain the fame, the respect, the reward.

Even if you would win every possible earthly lottery, championship, or award, Jesus would follow those victories up with one question: "What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?" (Matthew 16:26).

Actually, that's what most of us human beings do. We forfeit our soul to win more money. We sacrifice the spiritual for the financial. We basically have exchanged the hope of eternity for today's "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

No matter what you achieve, collect, or win - you are going to lose it all in the end. When you leave this world, you will not be able to take it with you.

That should be a wake-up call. It should encourage me to figure out what it means to "win" for the next life. To find out what Jesus means by the "treasures in heaven" we could have.

Are you willing to lose what you have to gain Christ? Are you willing to be a loser if it means "winning" God's approval? In the same conversation, Jesus teaches us that, "Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it."

The only way to find greatness, eternity, and victory in life is if you are willing to lose all that you are to gain all that God wants to offer you. It's time we Christians start to lose ourselves in the quest to follow Someone else.

Our Fallen World

My heart and mind are breaking over Hurricane Katrina. It has been called "the greatest natural disaster in American history," and I wouldn't disagree.

I have been watching a lot of CNN, to be honest. The coverage of the devastation, the looting, the desperation... it is all incredibly sad and alarming as the bad news seems to grow by the hour.

Several of the questions posed by reporters and others are pretty provocative, but not very relevant, for example:

(1) Why didn't we do more to prepare for this? At some point, that will be a valid question. But how in the world do you prepare for a level 5 hurricane? Everyone was told to evacuate, but not forced to actually do it. Unfortunately, this was not just "another hurricane" that people can ride out.

(2) Did God do this, as some sort of punishment on New Orleans? I've had this question in several e-mail. We live in a fallen world (Romans 8) with tragedies, disasters, and pain as a result of the curse of sin (Genesis 3). Gone are the Old Testament days when God sends judgment and tells us where it comes from and why it happened. For now, God allows creation to "groans" and suffers - sometimes dramatically - longing for God's eternal rescue and pointing people to faith in Christ.

Ultimately, our response should be that God grieves, God comforts, and God responds. We must pray for His response, and we must also seek to BE His response, as His church.

I do not think it is enough for the Christian community to say - along with all of the TV anchormen and women - that "our prayers are with you." We must give, we must serve, we must encourage. We must be proof that a loving God cares about the needs and devastation experienced in our own country.

I am grateful for places like The Red Cross and others, who are providing opportunities for people to give. If you give, please make sure that you are giving to a credible effort where funds go straight to relief efforts. Unfortunately, there have already been some bad schemes out to take people's money.

Unbelievable - unless this is truly a fallen world.

Bunch of No-Names?

At the end of Colossians, Paul mentions a handful of people we know very little about.

In 2005, we live in a culture of celebrities or personalities, and it is easy to feel insignificant. We've all felt insignificant or overlooked, before - at least I have. I grew up attending a church of seven thousand people - how could one person matter to God?

How could one person matter in the church?

But God really has wired each of us to make a contribution. While we are busy focusing on visible "heroes" like the Apostle Paul, God wants us to notice that everyone can play a heroic role in the faith.

For Tychicus, it was the role of "fellow servant," bringing valuable information and encouragement to Christians in Colosse.

For Nympha, it was hosting a brand new church in her own home.

For Epaphras, it was an ongoing effort to pray for other believers and their growth in the faith.

For Aristarchus, it was the key association of being a "fellow prisoner" in the Christ-proclaiming ministry of Paul.

We don't know much more about these people, or Archippus, Justus, or several others mentioned.

What I do know is that I'm reading about them 2,000 years later. They played an important role in the family of God, and so do you.

Nobody is without significance. We are all here to serve, and give what we can for God's eternal kingdom. The words Paul writes for Archippus might as well be to you and me today: "See to it that you finish the job God has given you!"

Fully-Devoted?

Last week, I attended a leadership conference put on by Willow Creek Community Church. This is a large church in Chicago that has done a great job at helping people find hope in Jesus Christ and grow in their faith. One thing I really appreciate about Willow Creek is their mission statement. The church's clearly stated purpose is to "turn irreligious people into fully-devoted followers of Christ."

Seems like that was Jesus's goal as well! He traveled around, calling people to be his "disciples." Today, we could use the word "student," "apprentice," "learner," or "protege" instead of disciple. Whatever word you choose, that word must imply some form of strong commitment and devotion.

Consider the very first church attenders... "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer."

Consider how Paul, a disciple himself, emphasizes total commitment to your communication with God. He writes to Colosse, "Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful" (Colossians 4:2).

Or to Christians in the town of Ephesus in Asia Minor, "Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children."

Or to his younger friend Timothy, he challenges him to "watch your life and your doctrine closely. Persevere in them..." (1 Timothy 4:16).

If we look through the Bible, we could find countless examples of what it means to be committed to following Christ in the way you live, think, and talk. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what Paul did, what the disciples did, or what your pastor did.

What about you? Are you a disciple of Jesus Christ?

My guess is that our country has millions of Christians but very few people who are actually devoted to Jesus in any meaningful way.

How would you tell if you are really committed as a follower of Christ?

Willow Creek would ask you if you attend church and participate in a small group. Most churches would ask you if you are volunteering somewhere and giving some of your money back to God.

But only God knows what's really in there - in the heart of you - are you devoted to Him? When I look at my own life, I know that's my desire. I also know this is a question I need to ask myself on a regular basis.

Hacienda Memories...

I really like Mexican food.

For two years, I worked at a place called “The Hacienda Mexican restaurant.” Some of my best memories happened there, and they have little to do with burritos.

I met Jennie Walta at Hacienda. She and I were servers, and now Jennie Underwood and I have been married for five terrific years!

I met God more deeply at Hacienda. You see, I came face-to-face with God’s mission for my life as I spent many hours at Hacienda.

Conversations with co-workers became friendships with people who were trying to make sense of life. As they heard I was becoming a pastor, we had many talks about God, faith, and life’s toughest issues.

"Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. This is my third year in a row attending the Summit, and I always find it to be a time of great challenge and encouragement as I desire to grow as a Christan leader.

With nine different speakers in three days, it makes for a pretty engaging and interesting time. I find myself looking forward to some speakers and "patiently enduring" other speakers. I think it's a pretty human thing for us to connect with certain people and not connect with others. However, we must be very careful not to play favorites too much - or pay too much attention to that - in the body of Christ.

The other night, I was thinking about how much I really like one speaker and kind of had him on a pedestal in my mind. For whatever reason, God brought to mind the divisions in the Corinthian churches over who would follow which teacher. Paul writes, "My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas"; still another, "I follow Christ." 1 Corinthians 1:11-12.

See - there it is, people picking favorites and actually DIVIDING over which pastor or teacher they liked the most. I see that happening in many churches, sometimes those with one pastor, and sometimes those with many. But Paul really challenges us to watch out for that... Listen to how he brings focus to the issue:

"Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?"

As a teacher, Paul may have personally "hoped" that people would like him, but at least he had the right perspective - the POINT is that we all follow Jesus Christ, and not get caught up in comparing speakers, playing favorites, or - in my case - actually trying to BE people's favorite!

So, I won't tell you what speakers I liked the best at the Summit. Each one has something unique to say and to contribute, and I might eventually share some specifics. But they are only worth listening to if they help point me to Christ.

In the name of...

Today, Jennie and I found out the gender of our second child, to be born on December 25th. How ironic, a Christmas baby!

We haven't told anyone the baby's name yet, and that's because we don't know. Very few decisions in life will last as long as this whole "name-giving thing."

My parents named me Gary "Noel" Underwood. Throughout the years, my "friends" have joked about either the Christmas-like nature of that name or even the feminine counterpart - "Noelle." But that name comes from Pastor Noel Irwin, a wise, caring, and respected role model for my parents.

During my life, I've been proud of my name. "Gary" means "loyal warrior." LOVE that! Throughout history, a person's name has been associated with his reputation, her abilities, or his family.

Only a select few choose to wear a different name. Believe it or not, you're not necessarily stuck with whatever name your parents gave you. In fact, every day is a chance to upgrade that name with the way you live and how you treat other people.

As we think about giving our Christmas baby a name, I am reminded of the most important name of all.

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him" (Colossians 3:17 NIV)

Leading Men - what our families crave.

I am skeptical of politicians.

Sometimes critical of public figures.

Cynical about religious figures.

Wonder where the real men are? Leaders who might be worth following?

God says that if a man cannot lead his own family, he is not allowed to lead as an elder in the church (1 Timothy 3:5). Real leadership starts at home.

But what makes a husband or father a godly leader?

The Leadership Vacuum

Many families have experienced the opposite.

The man might be a leader, but he “leads” with his “absence” - silently telling his wife that she doesn’t matter. Always doing his own thing.

He “leads” by authority, seeking to dominate and control his family, abusing his strength.

He “leads” by default, reproducing the non-verbal, “strong, silent” model of his father, insensitive to the needs, cares, and desires of his own, unique family.

For better or for worse, you are leading by your example.

The Heart of Spiritual Leaders

The Apostle Paul challenges husbands to lead and love their wives just like Christ himself loves - and sacrificed himself for - the church (Ephesians 5:22-33).

Yeah, that’s what great leadership looks like.

He was unselfish. Willing to sacrifice. Standing up for what is right. Giving everything for the ones He loves. Considering God’s desires above his own personal will. To his last breath, communicating his love - “Father forgive them...”

The greatest spiritual leader of all time was a strong, expressive, committed, sacrificial, loving, and compassionate servant.

Where do we begin?

After looking at Christ, I feel pretty inadequate. In fact, how many of us husbands and fathers realize the tremendous privilege and impact we have before us? To at least get the ball rolling...

(1) Commit to your own spiritual growth – If you are not fully-alive and growing in your faith, how can you influence others in the right direction? Is the Bible just another book? Is prayer less than real to you? Is church life a nuisance for you?

For your own life and for your family, I urge you to pursue God like you never have before! God can change your life, empower your heart, and use you to lead your family in ways that you cannot imagine. Let Christ be your leader!

(2) Get to really know your family – Too tired to listen to your wife? What happened to the best friend and lifelong companion you said those vows to?

Keep “dating”! Pursue time away together. Take family vacations, even if you’re just doing shopping. You are a true hero when you make time to bond, have fun, and communicate with the ones you say you love.

(3) Choose to accept your leadership responsibility – Like it or not, you’re a leader. You get to decide if you will accept this wonderful opportunity to influence your family for good, and leave a legacy that they will want to share with others. Unfortunately, many men forfeit the responsibility that comes with their families, and have no idea of the damage they cause.

Will you choose to be the best husband and father you could possibly be?

(4) Realize the consequences of your leadership – Like anything in life, your choice has consequences. A terrible leader will lead his wife toward hatred, resentment, and heartbreak. A God-honoring leader might discover what it is like to have a thriving, cherished, and unselfish wife as a result!

While it’s almost cool to criticize leaders in the news or on TV, it’s the lack of leadership in the family that has the greatest influence. What kind of leading man are you?

Total Eclipse of the Heart...

I remember one popular song telling me to “Listen to your Heart.” Two theme songs for the movie Rocky IV were “Burning Heart” and “Hearts on Fire,” as Rocky prepared for a big boxing match. Don Henley encouraged fans to remember “The Heart of the Matter.”

The heart is a pretty big deal in our culture. Americans, like few others in history, talk about the heart as the source of emotions, dreams, and passions.

What’s in your heart?

For most of us, the number one thing on our hearts is, unfortunately, ourselves. Our self-loving society leads us to answer the questions “What makes me happy?” “What makes me comfortable?” “What do I need?” “What do people think of me?” “What do I feel like doing today?”

Ironically, the world of “me” is not what’s really best for “my” heart. If I’m a Christian, then my heart and my entire life actually belongs to God, who loves me and gave everything to win my heart!

God calls us to “set your hearts on things above” (Colossians 3:1), and invest our lives in the things that last forever. Loving God requires a “total eclipse of the heart” – where you decide that you love God more than yourself.

Whose house is it?

"What is your church like?" "What do you like about your church?:" "My church rocks!"

Okay, so I'm guilty of it. Guilty of looking at church from the viewpoint of what it can do for me. I can't help but sing louder when I like the song or the style. I can't help but feel better or more inspired if the speaker really challenged me. I can't help but feel great when church.. um... makes me feel great?

But what about when it doesn't?

What about when they don't sing a song I like? When they ask for yet another commitment. When someone prays or says something I don't agree with. When the guy in front of me raises his hands during worship, and I wonder if he knows he's blocking my view...

I'm guilty of making church about ME. Maybe we all are. I guess it's human nature to have our own preferences, respond to certain approaches, and have a secret list of likes and dislikes about our church.

Aren't we all "consumers"? If we don't like the "product," we leave and go somewhere else. We stay and criticize. We keep score - good and bad - about church just like anything else.

Hey, if the Pastor struggles with these thoughts, I suppose all of us do. I think I've had my most passionate conversations about church with people who have a keen awareness that their local church "ain't what she should be."

What would it look like for God to join the discussion? For God himself to share the things he loves about your church? To point out his own "secret list" on how you should be doing it...

I bet God's list would look much different... His list has little to do with music styles, how well the pastor tells a story, or how friendly the ushers are.

God looks at the house - and He really doesn't care about all the externals. He looks right at the core of my heart and asks me a very pointed question... "Who owns this house?"

Strip all the externals away, and the church is about God, for God, and experiencing God.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow morning (Sunday), I hope I remember whose house it is, and give an undivided heart to Him. If I personally feel good or get a spiritual buzz from it, that's fine. But it's all about honoring God and spending time with Him in His house.

The Sermon on the...Church?

Today in class we talked about the longest of Jesus' sermons recorded in the Bible, his "Sermon on the Mount" in Matthew 5-7. Our discussion made me wonder a couple of things when it comes to what the church is all about.

What is the church? When God said, "Let there be 'church,'" what did He mean?

Did God mean big buildings, fun camps for kids, and a place for me to feel loved? Probably. Did He have in mind specific groups of people in certain places at pre-determined times? Probably.

But today, my definition of "church" got an upgrade. I already believed that God's church is made up of people who are grateful for His calling on their lives, salvation by grace through faith. We are certainly called to love God and love people. For whatever reason, it seemed new to hear thoughts about the Sermon on the Mount as it relates to what we should be doing in church....

That the church is to offer God's blessing to the poor in spirit, and embody and offer participation of the Kingdom of Heaven (5:1-10). Can we read those verses and be that blessed? Are we part of God's blessing towards others mentioned in that passage? Do those descriptions "poor in spirit" or "meek" or "peacemaker" apply to me?

That the church is to be "salt and light" with good deeds that draw the attention and admiration of those around us (5:13-16). How did our "light" come to be about shows we don't watch and words we don't say? Why did Jesus hang out with the poor and the sinners in the community?

That Jesus longs for church to NOT be a place of rules, but a place where our hearts THIRST for God, and we seek to get rid of things like hatred, lust, deceit, and revenge (5:17-42).

That God calls us to LOVE even our enemies because we have a greater goal in mind than our earthly sense of justice or comfort (the rest of Matthew 5). I must re-focus my entire way of thinking around heavenly rewards and God's Kingdom, not just on the here and now.

If you get a moment today, I'd urge you to start reading through Matthew 5-7. Am I that kind of Christian? Are we becoming that kind of church?

A major focus of our class so far has been getting us back to God's real purposes for the church. Too many churches have blown it, as human-led organizations do tend to have their flaws. But let's not miss out on letting God set the stage, define His church, and let you and me humbly take our places in following His design...

Christianity = Dangerous?

I believe that God wants us to bring our physical needs and desires to Him in prayer. But He never promised to make life easy. In fact, if anything, Jesus promised that life on earth would be very difficult. Consider just these two verses:

John 16:33 - "In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world!"

2 Timothy 3:12 - "In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted."

Seems like there's a higher priority to God than my personal comfort. Something is more important than my safety, my sense of security, or my self-preservation.

Yet it's easy to live as a "Christian" who retreats from danger, protects myself, and convinces my soul that God wouldn't want me to confront, risk, advance, or sacrifice in a way that sets me back. I don't want to offend or hurt anyone else either, "for heaven's sake!"

As I read Colossians, I am confronted with the "prison-bound" heart of the Apostle Paul. Stuck behind bars in Rome, Paul could care less about his own situation. Instead, the man struggles in prayer for Christ-followers around the globe. With great energy, he writes letters, talks with church leaders, prays until exhaustion, and gives every ounce of his body and soul toward advancing the gospel.

In another letter, Paul writes, "I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my own countrymen, in danger from Gentiles, in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false brothers. I have labored and toiled and gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked." (2 Corinthians 11:26-27).

How many American's would have given up their faith BEFORE facing any of those obstacles? How many times have I done the same?

Following Christ is not the route to safety, comfort, and happiness during your life on earth. The voice inside calling you to play it safe? It's probably not God.

God calls each one of us to something greater. Something eternal. Something and Someone worth fighting for, suffering for, and risking everything for.

Simply Irresistible?

Has the church lost its influence in the world?

Jesus repeatedly called and inspired his friends to not just talk about love, but do it. "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16)

People today are tired of talk. Tired of religion. Tired of organized church. 80% of the Delaware community chooses not to attend church.

After reading Robert Lewis's book about how a church (and individual Christians) can really succeed at demonstrating the love of Christ to others in their communities, I am inspired to want to do that myself. To quote the author, a church should be defined or described as "a community of people who are committed to being living proof of a loving God to a watching world."

Does that sound like your church?

Living proof of a loving God to a watching world?
